Remove wires from a photo

Clear cables, wires and rigging lines from a shot. Thin lines against a simple background disappear almost perfectly.

The short version

Wire removal is a staple of product and architectural work: a support wire, a hanging cable, a rigging line. Because the wire is only a few pixels across, the fill has abundant context on both sides and closes the gap almost perfectly on plain backgrounds.

How to do it

  1. Drop the photo in.

  2. Trace along the wire with a brush a few times its width.

  3. Remove and follow the line at full zoom.

Questions

How wide should the brush be?
A few times the wire width. That is easier to drag accurately and swallows the soft edge either side.
A wire crossing a detailed background?
It will still close, but where the wire crosses a boundary such as a roofline or an edge, that boundary may not rejoin cleanly.
Can I do a whole rig of wires?
Yes. Trace each one before pressing Remove; they are handled in a single pass.
Does this work for suspended product shots?
It is one of the best cases: a wire on a plain studio backdrop vanishes completely.
