Remove subtitles from an image
Clear hardcoded subtitles from a video frame or screenshot. Works best where the background is dark or blurred.
The short version
Hardcoded subtitles are burned into the frame, so there is no track to switch off, so the pixels have to be rebuilt. Helpfully, subtitles usually sit over the darker, blurrier lower third of a shot, which is easier to reconstruct than a detailed centre.
How to do it

Questions
- Can it do a whole video?
- No. This works on still images. You would need to export frames and handle them individually.
- Why does the lower third work well?
- Because it is often out of focus or in shadow. Soft, low-detail regions are the easiest thing to rebuild.
- Subtitles have a black outline: include it?
- Yes. Select the outline and any shadow, otherwise you get a ghost of the lettering.
- Two lines of subtitle: one box or two?
- One box covering both is usually cleaner than two adjacent boxes, which can leave a band between them.
