Remove a blemish from a photo

Spot-clean marks and blemishes on skin. Small, round selections on even skin tone give by far the most natural-looking result.

The short version

Spot removal is the one place where working on faces is reliable, because a blemish is small and the skin immediately around it is even in tone. Keep the brush barely larger than the mark. A big selection over a face invites the fill to reshape features rather than just patch a spot.

How to do it

  1. Drop the portrait in and zoom in.

  2. Use a small brush, barely wider than the mark.

  3. Remove, then repeat spot by spot.

Questions

Why keep the brush small on faces?
Large selections on a face let the fill invent facial structure, which rarely looks right. Small patches on even skin are the reliable case.
Will skin texture be preserved?
Approximately. The patch tends to be slightly smoother than real skin, which is usually invisible at normal size.
Can it do several spots at once?
It can, but working one at a time gives better results, because each pass samples freshly cleaned skin around it.
Is this a beauty filter?
No. It patches regions you select and nothing else. It does not smooth, reshape or alter anything you have not painted.
