Remove a caption from an image
Clear meme captions, headline bars and overlaid text blocks from an image, or crop them off entirely with the Snip tool.
The short version
Captions usually sit in a solid bar at the top or bottom of the frame. If the bar covers the image, the fill has to invent that strip entirely, which works over sky or blur and struggles over detail. If the bar was added outside the frame, cropping it off is the better answer.
How to do it

Remove, or use Snip to crop it off instead.
Questions
- Should I fill the bar or crop it?
- If the bar was added around the image, crop with Snip, which is lossless and always looks right. Only fill when the bar covers real image.
- A tall caption bar leaves a smudge: why?
- A wide strip is a large gap to invent, and the fill softens across distance. Cropping is usually the better answer there.
- Does it handle text directly over the photo?
- Yes, and better than a solid bar, because there is real background around each letter to sample.
- Will the aspect ratio change if I crop?
- Yes. Snip outputs exactly the region you drew, so the ratio is whatever you selected.
