Remove a watermark from a stock photo

Clean the tiled watermark off a stock image you have licensed. Handles large repeating overlays across the whole frame.

The short version

Stock watermarks are the hard case, because they are usually tiled diagonally across the entire frame rather than tucked into a corner. That means the fill has to invent a large area rather than patch a small one, and the results vary a lot with how busy the underlying photo is.

How to do it

  1. Drop the licensed image in.

  2. Paint over the watermark tiles, working in sections rather than all at once.

  3. Remove, then refine any patch that did not land.

Questions

Will a full-frame tiled watermark come out cleanly?
Partly. Small marks over sky, walls or blur do well. A watermark crossing faces or fine detail will not reconstruct convincingly at this size.
What is the best way to approach a big watermark?
Work in sections. Clean one region, press Keep editing, then do the next. Smaller selections give the fill better surrounding context.
Why is my result blurry in the middle?
The fill works outward from the edges of your selection. In the middle of a very large hole it has little to go on, so detail fades.
Is there a better option for licensed images?
Downloading the clean version from your licence is always going to beat reconstructing it. Use this when that is not available to you.
