Remove a watermark from a scanned document
Clear DRAFT, COPY, CONFIDENTIAL and other stamps off a scanned page while leaving the text underneath readable.
The short version
Scanned pages are mostly white, which makes a stamp sitting in the margin trivial to clear. Where it gets interesting is a large diagonal DRAFT across the body text. The fill will rebuild the paper convincingly, but any letters it covered are gone and will be reconstructed as plausible shapes.
How to do it
Drop the scanned page in.
Paint over the stamp, staying off the body text where you can.
Remove and download.
Questions
- Will the text under the stamp be recovered?
- No. Nothing can recover information that is not in the file. Over blank paper the result is clean; over text it produces plausible shapes, not the real words.
- Does it work on a PDF?
- Not directly. Export the page as PNG or JPEG first, clean it, then reassemble the PDF.
- How do I keep the paper texture consistent?
- Paint a little wider than the stamp. The fill samples the surrounding paper, so giving it more clean margin produces a better match.
- Will it handle a coloured stamp over black text?
- On the margin, yes, easily. Directly over dense text the seam will usually be noticeable at full zoom.
