Remove a watermark from a JPG
Paint over the watermark on a JPG or JPEG and it is reconstructed from the surrounding image. Full resolution out, nothing uploaded.
The short version
JPEG stores a watermark the same way it stores everything else, as compressed blocks, which means a hard-edged logo usually drags a halo of compression artefacts around it. Painting a little wider than the visible mark catches that halo, and the fill is generated from the pixels immediately around your selection.
How to do it
Drop your JPG into the editor.
Brush over the watermark and the faint ring of artefacts around it.
Press Remove and save the cleaned JPG.
Questions
- Does saving re-compress the JPEG?
- Yes, once, at quality 0.95. That is unavoidable for JPEG. If you want a lossless result instead, the editor can hand you a PNG.
- Why does a faint outline sometimes remain?
- JPEG compression spreads a watermark slightly beyond its visible edge. Paint a few pixels wider than the mark looks and the outline goes with it.
- Can I do several photos at once?
- Not yet, it is one image at a time. Each takes a few seconds once the model has loaded, and the model only loads once per browser.
- Does it work on photos from a phone?
- Yes. Phone JPEGs are usually 3000-4000px, comfortably inside the limit, and the whole thing runs on the phone itself.
