Remove a reflection from a photo

Clear reflections and glare patches from glass and glossy surfaces by rebuilding the area underneath from its surroundings.

The short version

A reflection is two images layered on top of each other, and no fill can separate them. What it can do is replace the reflected patch with something consistent with its surroundings. Small, well-defined glare spots work; a reflection spread across a whole window does not.

How to do it

  1. Drop the photo in.

  2. Paint over the reflected patch.

  3. Remove and see whether the surface still reads correctly.

Questions

Can it see through the reflection?
No. It replaces the area with something plausible from the surroundings rather than recovering what was behind the glass.
What works best?
Small, bright, well-defined glare spots on an otherwise even surface. Those blend in almost immediately.
A reflection across a whole window?
Too large. The fill will flatten the entire pane and it will look obviously wrong.
Does it work on spectacles in a portrait?
Small glare on a lens, sometimes. Anything covering the eye will be invented, so treat the result carefully.
