Remove glare from a photo
Clear blown highlights and glare hotspots by rebuilding the affected surface from the pixels immediately around it.
The short version
A blown highlight has no detail left in it: the pixels are simply at maximum. That means nothing can recover the original surface, but the area can be replaced with something matching what surrounds it, which for an even surface is usually enough to fix the shot.
How to do it
Drop the photo in.
Paint over the blown patch and its soft falloff.
Remove and check the tone against its surroundings.
Questions
- Is the lost detail recoverable?
- Not from a blown highlight; the information is gone. The area is replaced with a plausible continuation instead.
- Should I include the soft edge?
- Yes. Glare falls off gradually, and stopping at the bright core leaves a visible halo.
- What if the glare covers a large area?
- Large patches flatten out. Better to reshoot, or accept a softer result than the original surface had.
- Does it work on glare on paper or a screen?
- On plain paper, well. On a screen showing content, it will invent that content rather than restore it.
