Remove birds from a sky photo

Specks of birds across an otherwise clean sky, painted out in seconds. One of the easiest fixes there is, and it leaves no trace.

The short version

Birds in an otherwise empty sky are tiny, high-contrast and sitting on a smooth background, which makes them about as easy as this gets. A few quick dabs with a small brush and they are gone with no visible trace at all.

How to do it

  1. Drop the sky shot in.

  2. Dab over each bird with a small brush.

  3. Remove them all in a single pass.

Questions

Can I get them all at once?
Yes. Dab over every bird before pressing Remove, and they are all handled in one pass.
Will it work against cloud rather than blue?
Yes. Cloud texture is soft and continuous, so it reconstructs about as well as flat blue does.
The birds are near the horizon: still fine?
Near a hard horizon line, paint carefully. Straddling the line makes the fill try to rebuild the horizon, which can bend it.
How small can the brush go?
Down to two pixels, though slightly wider than the bird gives a cleaner result than a pixel-tight selection.
