Remove power lines from a photo

Cables and pylons across a sky are one of the cleanest possible fixes. Paint the line, it disappears into the sky.

The short version

Power lines against sky are the single most satisfying thing to remove. A cable is a couple of pixels wide, the sky behind it is a smooth gradient, and the fill has more than enough context to continue it. Landscape and property photographers do this constantly.

How to do it

  1. Drop the landscape in.

  2. Trace along each cable with a modest brush.

  3. Remove, and the sky closes over almost invisibly.

Questions

Do I need to trace precisely?
No. A brush a few times wider than the cable is easier to drag and gives a better result than a tight, wobbly line.
What about the pylon itself?
A pylon against open sky usually goes too. One overlapping trees or buildings is far harder, because the fill has to rebuild that structure.
Will a gradient sky stay smooth?
Yes. Continuing a smooth gradient is the easiest case for this kind of fill, and the seam is normally invisible.
Several crossing cables: one pass or many?
One pass. Paint all of them, then Remove once. Overlapping selections merge into a single region automatically.
