Remove a person from a photo

Paint over someone in the background of your photo and the scene behind them is rebuilt. Works best against sky, grass or a plain wall.

The short version

A person standing against sky, sand, grass or a plain wall usually comes out cleanly, because the model only has to continue a texture it can already see. Someone standing in front of architecture, a crowd, or another person is a different matter. There the fill has to invent structure, and structure is exactly what it is weakest at.

How to do it

  1. Drop the photo in.

  2. Paint over the person and the shadow they cast.

  3. Remove, then zoom in to check the edges.

Questions

Can it remove someone standing in front of a building?
Partly. Straight lines and window grids rarely line up correctly across the gap. Expect to see the seam if you look closely.
What about someone at the edge of the frame?
That is often easier to crop than to fill. The Snip tool will cut them out of the frame entirely with no reconstruction needed.
Does it work on a group photo?
Removing someone touching or overlapping another person tends not to look right, because the fill has to reconstruct the hidden half of a body.
How big can the person be in frame?
The smaller the better. A distant figure is trivial; someone filling a third of the frame is beyond what this can convincingly rebuild.
